ABSTRACT

The idea of using service-learning for teaching design to planning students is attractive, and having a project located in a very low-income community such as a Texas colonia is an even more exciting proposition. This chapter describes the project, discusses the conditions that worked for and against it, and concludes with the lessons learned for successful implementation of future projects. The opportunity to design a project that would actually be built would clearly be a motivating force for the students. In fall 2002, the students were asked to design a community open space or park for a colonia — a very low-income community located on the Texas-Mexico border. The experience of this class highlights both the successes and challenges of service-learning for teaching design to planning students. If service-learning is deemed valuable, funding and active support by the university are absolutely essential. Finally, working with an active and engaged community organization is essential for successful service-learning, particularly in the colonias.
