ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the process of internationalizing a psychology department as a model. It recommends the formation of a departmental task force to select an initial list of core courses for international transformation. Once courses are selected, faculty can decide on international student learning outcomes (SLOs) and develop appropriate assignments and assessments. In psychology, for example, a course could be transformed by examining licensing procedures for clinicians, exploring mental health issues faced in other countries, and reviewing legal issues surrounding mental health. The chapter describes seven examples of SLOs and assignments that will hopefully stimulate faculty thinking at other institutions. All majors in the department are required to take a course in career development, which up to now has focused on career opportunities within the United States for people with psychology degrees. The new SLO aims to increase student awareness of career opportunities in other countries.
