ABSTRACT

Student involvement in curriculum transformation can take a number of forms, ranging from informal comments in class discussions to assignments that involve identifying sources of diverse perspectives and determining how to integrate them into the curriculum. Awareness of the sociocultural forces that shape a discipline may be facilitated by exposing students to the ways in which a discipline’s content, methods, and pedagogical approaches differ throughout the world. In order to be effective change agents, students need to be trained in the specific skills necessary to understand and have an impact on curriculum transformation efforts. Key skills include the ability to speak the language of curriculum transformation, assess the level of inclusion in the existing curriculum, identify biases in course content and pedagogy, and seek diverse perspectives excluded from the curriculum. A welcoming and supportive classroom environment is key to enlisting the participation of students in curriculum transformation efforts.
