ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by reminding the reader of the importance of teaching diversity awareness and multicultural education. It reviews the meaning of multicultural competence, touches on some of the challenges in teaching this topic, and covers some evidence-based techniques for teaching. Finally, the chapter provides an innovative way to introduce multiculturalism and diversity awareness in the classroom. Post-activity discussion generated ideas instructors could use to help their students safely examine their own biases and stereotypes as they embarked on the study of diverse cultures and people. Handouts of the various slides can be made and distributed to the participants. The instructor explains the contents of the slide and answers questions to clarify any misunderstanding. The chapter gives instructors an innovative method for introducing the topics of diversity awareness and multicultural competence to their students.
