ABSTRACT

As the field of diversity education emerges, it is vital to establish best practices. This chapter addresses how one can integrate unique diversity learning environments with authentic expression in each of the aforementioned domains. Moore et al. identify several activities that are useful in multicultural education, including field trips, self-reflective activities, retreats, class presentations, and field observation. Periodically throughout the learning cycle, learners are required to engage in group analyses of case studies. Because the sociopolitical climate is influential in the diversity learning environment, it can be useful for instructors to acknowledge that living in the current social context impacts dialogue in and out of the classroom. Teaching portfolios are useful resources for critical reflection. Elements of the Lyons teaching portfolio include an introduction, a teaching philosophy, materials such as a course syllabus, activities students are asked to perform and do, and student work, examinations, and projects.
