ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on high school teaching, college and university faculty deal with many of the same issues as the population of students entering college becomes more diverse. Schools primarily focus on diversity issues related to learning, such as learning or physical disabilities. One way to emphasize diversity in a classroom is to teach in a differentiated way. By evaluating the needs of students with disabilities, the backgrounds of students, and the social atmosphere of each class, teachers can craft a course that addresses the particular diversity needs of their students. Teachers may want to restructure their courses to emphasize diversity without teaching diversity as a separate topic. English and language arts teachers can organize their courses in similar ways, choosing readings that emphasize diversity issues and encouraging students to read works that further expound on issues such as women’s roles in society, prejudice and discrimination, and religious tolerance.
