ABSTRACT

This chapter assists educators in developing a “metapedagogical approach (MPA)” for their professional and intellectual development as well as their students’ self-development. It explains the necessary tools for cultural awareness within and beyond their respective fields of expertise. The chapter provides examples that educators may use to naturally incorporate diverse themes, models, and exercises in ways that can positively sensitize students to the relevant issues of diverse populations. Developing one’s MPA requires a constant introspective analysis of oneself (as educator or student) that trains one to question one’s own fundamental assumptions (worldview) about the world and others. The MPA is a philosophy that starts with educators’ own self-examination so that they can more effectively lead their students to a similar level of self-analysis, which then should lead all of those in the classroom to a greater acceptance of cultural differences and others from diverse backgrounds.
