ABSTRACT

Electronic portfolios, referred to as ePortfolios, are electronic representations of what students know and can do. Generally, ePortfolios are grouped into three categories: learning or developmental portfolios, which are more tentative works-in-progress; assessment portfolios, which encourage organizing the evidence of learning around certain outcomes or competencies; and showcase or career portfolios, which highlight the most polished work. This chapter discusses the challenges and benefits of ePortfolios in fully online learning environments and pose recommendations for implementation and support, using examples drawn from our ePortfolio practice at the City University of New York School of Professional Studies where ePortfolios have been used in fully online undergraduate and graduate programs since 2008. Using an ePortfolio, adult learners are able to document their learning and represent their growth in new competencies or fields of study in an authentic way.
