ABSTRACT

Libraries are frequently called “the heart of the university,” referring not only to their often central physical location on campus but also to their pivotal role in serving all students, faculty, and staff, regardless of discipline or unit, and creating an environment that stimulates learning and academic success. This chapter provides an overview of the kinds of information resources and pedagogical support services that libraries provide to faculty and instructors in support of high-impact practices (HIPs). It reviews the literature on HIPs and libraries and provide examples of successful library integration into activities and programs that support these practices. The chapter discusses how improving student information literacy skills can increase the success of HIPs in the online learning environment. It describes the basics of access to collections and general research assistance to other ways libraries can and have supported HIPs specifically through embedded librarianship, support of undergraduate research practices, and the library as a place that supports community and collaboration.
