ABSTRACT

The normalization of digital teaching modalities in postsecondary education has occurred while institutions of higher education have increasingly pursued inclusive teaching and learning practices. This chapter explores the application of diversity and global learning within the context of online coursework, to more fully understand the interaction of digital and diversity transformation in higher education. It also explores specific strategies for successfully incorporating diversity and global learning in the online environment, after reviewing the literature on diversity and global learning and online education as distinct domains. The chapter focuses on common challenges inhibiting this work, with related solutions for successfully overcoming the challenges and facilitating high-impact learning. When considering some of the challenges facing effective implementation of diversity and global learning in online courses, the reflex may be to solve all the problems with online cohorts and/or hybrid models.
