ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how actors in higher education organizations behave while serving organizational interests and connects organizational behavior to student persistence in college. It discusses how organizational behavior was missing from early retention theory and what changes have occurred since early retention theories and calls for attention to organization behavior concerns were raised. The chapter includes recent literature about the effects of organizational behavior framings on practices that have been linked to student persistence utilizing Berger's summary of five organizational frames and their relationship to undergraduate student persistence within higher education. It summarizes existing multidimensional organizational frameworks that can be adopted to promote student success. Collegial organizational behaviors influence students’ intentions to persist by promoting a caring culture within the university.
