ABSTRACT

Leaders’ and participants’ purposes that are aligned contribute greatly to activity effectiveness. Professional development leaders’ usual intent is to help participants achieve learning related to their performance. Such leaders’ intentions may be largely implicit in the information about an activity provided for prospective participants. Information seeking and decisions about participation vary among potential participants, who are also diverse in how explicitly they recognize their own expectations. The examples and concepts in this chapter are intended to explain how and why it is important for leaders and participants to express and share their expectations early in a learning activity. Following the leader’s task, an example is provided. The chapter concludes with suggested questions regarding selection of guidelines.
