ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the harmful effects of the ban on academia in the United States more generally and offers recommendations on how academic institutions may support students and also comply with international human rights standards while navigating the travel ban. The intellectual contributions and diverse cultural perspectives that international students bring to US campuses are invaluable. There is great concern over the impact of the Muslim ban on academia and scholarship more broadly. The impact of the Muslim travel ban was clearly tied to the president's intent in enacting the ban. Schools should consider setting up extra support services for international students from the impacted countries and the broader region, as well as Muslim students who are likely to have extra concerns related to the application process. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights establishes universal standards for the protection of basic civil and political liberties.
