ABSTRACT

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the United States. Researchers estimate that Latinx Muslims are one of the fastest growing sectors of Islam in the United States. In order to help support the Latinx converts, Latinx Muslim organizations were born to meet the language and cultural needs of the Latinx community. Many explain their conversion or reversion as a return to their pre-Hispanic and pre-Catholic identity. Those who write about the Latinx Muslim experience often write from a conversion perspective, but many Latinx Muslims talk about their experience from a reversion perspective. It is possible that the population of Latinx Muslims in higher education institutions is similar to that of Muslim millennials because most are within traditional college-going age. Students may be experiencing stress and isolation due to their minority identities that American higher education has historically excluded from their campuses and master plans, and from a lack of fit in both of their communities.
