ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book sets up the context for internationalization, and addresses the senior international officers (SIOs) role, the theoretical foundation for leading internationalization, and the SIO as change agent. It then examines leadership and management with a focus on strategic planning, administration, forming alliances, and financing internationalization. The book also focuses on specific areas of expertise needed by the SIO, which include internationalizing the curriculum, overseeing outcomes assessment in international education, recruiting international students, and managing risk. It explains the role of the SIO in advocating for international education. The book explores the case for internationalization, fostering a global culture within the institution, connecting with the community, and establishing partnerships. It finally highlights areas of personal effectiveness for SIOs, including entrepreneurship, intercultural knowledge, data management, and ethical practice.
