ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the following factors/dynamics senior international officers (SIOs) should consider in finding ways to garner resources and finance internationalization: accessing resources through strategic approaches, exploring funding options (both inside and outside the institution), and determining and strengthening the level of strategic inclusion. There are at least two levels to internationalization on any campus: macro (institutional climate) and micro (project specific). There are funding opportunities at different levels of government, although in the current political climate some of these funding mechanisms can be quite competitive. Knowing the strengths of the institution and finding grant or contract opportunities that seek these strengths is one strategy for deciding on potential funders. The step toward evaluating where the office stands in this regard is to conduct (even informally) an inventory of institutional assets as they pertain to internationalization and to analyze to what extent SIOs are able to come to the table to negotiate for resource allocation on behalf of internationalization.
