ABSTRACT

The responsibility for international student recruitment varies across institutions, but often the office of admissions is tasked with both domestic and international recruitment. In some cases, the senior international officer has responsibility for international student recruitment and admissions or has responsibility for recruitment but not admissions. This chapter explains the strategic international recruitment planning, international student recruitment strategies, and recruitment challenges. Two critical steps in the process are developing the budget and deciding on recruitment strategies. The allocation of a separate, additional budget for international recruitment is sometimes a missing component in an institution’s plan. Sponsored students are international students who are receiving some funding from a government or an organization to attend a foreign university. Agent-based recruitment has become more widespread in the United States and other countries as more institutions enter the international student recruitment arena. Particularly in China and India, agent-based recruitment is an accepted path for students to study in foreign countries.
