ABSTRACT

Many countries face growing resistance to policies promoting multiculturalism and cultural openness. This changing global political landscape provides as leaders in international education both the challenge and the opportunity to advocate for internationalization and promote the power of international education, locally and beyond. One of the most critical aspects in times such as these is a heightened awareness of the necessity to hone our skills in communicating the imperative of international higher education to a redefined and expanded audience. This chapter examines how to align the messages to the audience, use a multiprong approach on campus, and advocate beyond the campus. At the core of internationalization advocacy is the story. Communicating the value proposition of internationalization beyond the academy (i.e., to the broader public and local citizens) requires conducting authentic conversations with local constituents and improving stakeholder relations. Today this may even entail redefining stakeholders and building coalitions through innovative approaches.
