ABSTRACT

Administrations of higher education institutions widely consider international partnerships to be critical to their international engagement ambitions. This chapter focuses on partnerships between institutions of higher education. It discusses various types of international partnerships and the concept of a “strategic” partnership and selection of partners. The chapter describes some key points related to the administration of partnerships; leadership implications for the senior international officer (SIO) in international partnership development; and challenges institutions may face as they seek to increase their international engagement efforts through partnerships. Institutions that lack any guidelines for agreements/partnerships, including who has authority to sign for the institution, may find themselves bound by an undesirable agreement. In fact, most institutions have or are taking steps to bring order to the international partnership process. In many cases, the process has been centralized under the responsibility of the SIO.
