ABSTRACT

The context of international education is increasingly complex and overridden with overt and hidden ethical issues. Political and increasingly economic interests conflict. This chapter describes some key considerations in ethically leading internationalization, which can be applied at the micro, meso, and macro levels. Those considerations include decisions that are values driven, purpose driven, relationship based, and issues based. International educators often focus on the micro level of how actions impact individuals with special consideration for students. Ethical decisions should consider implications for students, faculty, staff, and other individuals at the institution. In navigating the challenging terrain of ethical issues and dilemmas, it becomes important for leaders to “go deep” in understanding underlying values that may be influencing certain stances of all those involved. Searching for common ground within values may prove to be a way forward when faced with such dilemmas.
