ABSTRACT

As international education becomes more central to the life of the academy, international education administration must be reflected in institutional leadership. The senior international officer must have substantial familiarity with the following elements that are key to sound and effective international education administration: leading comprehensive internationalization with curriculum as driver; strategic planning for internationalization;and developing a profile of an international education center. The elements also include managing administrative complexities; hiring practices; supporting professional development; pursuing diversity and campus internationalization; and budgeting for (and financing) internationalization. The value of diversity in higher education has gained currency in recent years, and educators increasingly recognize that the best learning outcomes are achieved when there is diversity among the student body and among faculty. International education as a field has struggled with diversity, an unfortunate circumstance given that diversity is core to the message of internationalization.
