ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the reorganization of what was a highly independent, departmentally focused division of student affairs into what is an emerging, interdependent, student-focused learning organization. It includes a description of the context and results of the reorganization as well as an explanation of the implications of the reorganization for student affairs educators and for students. For years, the student affairs division at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), functioned satisfactorily in a traditional organizational structure. Inherent in the reorganization of the Division of Student Life at UNLV were the assumptions and principles of the Learning Partnerships Model for promoting learning partnerships. The Learning Partnerships Model and the understanding of what is essentially a very human journey provide a foundation from which organizations may humanize bureaucracy, deconstruct mechanical ways of working, and, ultimately, serve students more effectively.
