ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the Multicultural Education Framework (MEF) and the ways in which it exemplifies the assumptions and the principles of the Learning Partnerships Model through a discussion of both the model and of a community college course where it was implemented. The MEF pays particular attention to the challenges in working with White students in multicultural education endeavors; however, the focus on culture and its creation can be used with students from other racial and ethnic backgrounds. The opportunity to implement a theory into practice is a chance to test the underlying assumptions driving the theory and to provide assessment data to the larger research community. Lack of exposure to diverse others was common among many of the participants in the course. The development of a self-authored multicultural perspective is an extremely complex process that requires the reconstruction of knowledge, beliefs, and values that arise from living in a racist society where privilege is based on skin color.
