ABSTRACT
Certain moments in life quickly come and are quickly replaced by subsequent steps in life’s endless dance. Other moments become immortalized in memory as events, feelings, or understandings that influence every other step that is ever taken. The Urban Leadership Internship Program (ULIP) is administered through the University Honors and Scholars Program. The assessment of outcomes for the summer 2002 interns consisted of a thorough review of students’ journal entries, the “your calling” paper, and 12 one-on-one student interviews. Engaging in the assigned written reflections played a critical role in the lives of students and in their ability to make meaning of the ULIP experience. The ULIP provides a rich and unique experience for students that incorporates the basic principles and assumptions of the Learning Partnerships Model. “Unplugging” from the relative safety and predictability of campus life, though often formidable, can offer a rewarding opportunity for growth and learning.
