ABSTRACT

Imagine fifth grade students begging to be taught how to write business letters, eagerly standing for hours in a small back room bagging rice and oatmeal, giving up valuable recess time to tutor kindergartners, or enthusiastically publishing poetry books to share with elderly clients at a restorative care center. What makes these students so eager to give of themselves, to care for others, to be selfless in this selfish world? They have been bitten by the service-learning bug and experienced the joys of learning while serving. They have discovered that using their hearts, heads, and hands to help others can be a more interesting way to learn the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic.
