ABSTRACT

Service-learning projects provide college students with the chance to experience and learn that community service is multifaceted. Environmental studies are now included in most public schools. Schools in rural America have ready access to the natural history of an area, and even urban schools can usually find some natural habitat within the confines of the city. An introductory study of native flora provides a good introduction to natural communities, which are normally first described by the vegetation growing within them. Such study may serve as a base for later environmental studies. UMF students and CBS teachers were able to see first hand how different children learn differently Awareness of nature has recently been recognized as one of the eight “multiple intelligences” recognized by Howard Gardner.
