ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the evolution of the learning communities program at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC). This innovative and nationally recognized program serves the entire class of incoming first-year students and has been used as a model for other learning community programs in Texas and across the nation. After a brief historical background and an overview of the basic structure of the learning communities program, examples of successful learning community arrangements are provided. As part of this discussion, the first-year seminar course is fully detailed, as it is the one course that all learning communities have in common. The topics of integration, co-enrollment, and consistency are addressed in relation to one of our most established learning communities— the science learning community.
