ABSTRACT

The January 17, 1994, Northridge earthquake remains a seminal event in the history of California State University, Northridge (CSUN). with the epicenter of the quake located within two miles of the campus, the natural disaster caused $400 million in damage, the most serious for a university campus up to that time. Nearly all 107 buildings on campus were impacted—a parking structure collapsed and buildings were severely damaged. Several of those buildings eventually had to be razed when they were deemed irreparable, and others remained closed for an extended period.
