ABSTRACT

This article provides a guide for developing and using self-assessment tools to enhance the teaching proficiency of educators of adults and others in counseling or advising professions. Many teachers of adults wish to increase their effectiveness, enhance the learning of participants in their programs, or improve their educational programs through their own performance improvement. Foundational literature in adult educator professional development suggests that the best way to support teachers of adults in that process is to emphasize their learning alongside that of their participants. Additionally, providing teachers of adults with opportunities to reflect on their performance and future development can influence their motivation to participate in learning activities (Knox, 1980a). Well-designed, ongoing, guided selfassessment experiences may provide one way of enhancing this understanding.
