ABSTRACT

This chapter frames community-based service-learning as an engaged andragogy focused on the development of adult learners, engagement of learners within their communities, and the advancement of andragogy through tested experiential learning methodology. Key aspects of this chapter will underpin and define community-based service-learning in the context of Deweyan experiential education philosophy, Kolb’s experiential learning, and Mezirow’s transformational learning theories, and showcase effective elements of service-learning programs. Additionally, practical case examples across a range of disciplines in both national and international contexts are presented. Finally, critical service-learning as social justice in action is discussed to demonstrate the value, versatility, and greater purpose of service-learning as an engaged andragogy.
