ABSTRACT

This chapter presents methods for adult education in the context of field-based experiences (FBE) and considers the question: What are the special considerations, methods, or techniques necessary for successful adult learning in FBE? This chapter primarily focuses on citizen, civic, or community science, abbreviated C*Sci, as the primary setting, with support from other FBE contexts as needed, and begins with an overview of key qualities of FBE and connections to adult education. Multiple adult education theoretical perspectives may be relevant to frame FBE, including place-based learning, experiential learning, self-directed learning, and field-specific frameworks. These perspectives inform a robust presentation of adult education methods and processes. The chapter concludes with attention to issues of social justice, inclusion, and accessibility.
