ABSTRACT

This chapter provides insight on dialogue as a tool to apply within adult education. Drawing on feminist scholar practitioner bell hooks, the authors detail dialogue as a means of transformative and social cultural learning. Threaded throughout this chapter are the authors’ personal experiences as scholars and practitioners tied to the application of hooks’ approach to dialogue. The authors denote the importance of reflexivity, asking questions of one’s own social identity-based experiences. As facilitators, the authors identify where their actions within adult education context decenter imperialist white supremacist patriarchy. Finally, this chapter closes with recommendations for readers’ critical reflection in preparation for dialogue facilitation.
