ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a revised and updated iteration of original model, the integrative model of multiraciality (IMM), which incorporated multiraciality into campus climate. Although this literature is helpful and relevant, it tends not to consider the role of racism or specifically focus on campus climate. In the first version of our model, the authors used the term integrative because the IMM integrated both racism and monoracism as well as insights from the literature on multiracial identity and campus climate. Each additional piece of the pie demonstrates different ways that monoracism and monoracial norms can manifest through the campus climate and influence student development and outcomes. This contextualization is crucial because doing so identifies multiple forms of racism as the root cause for toxic campus climates and inequitable student outcomes across racial groups.
