ABSTRACT

On May 7, 2019, the Academic Senate of San Francisco State University (SF State) approved the first degree-granting program in the field of critical mixed race studies (CMRS). The development of this historic minor in CMRS is part of a larger project of building the discipline of CMRS elucidated in 'Emerging Paradigms in Critical Mixed Race Studies'. In creating the CMRS minor at SF State, we aimed to offer students critical, theoretical, and methodological approaches for addressing notions of mixed race, mixed heritage, and transracial adoptee identity development and community agency in a variety of institutionalized contexts academic and otherwise. From there, the authors provide a detailed account of the creation of a CMRS minor in SF State's College of Ethnic Studies. As data collection and interpretation about mixed race populations become more nuanced and responsive to community needs and scholarly insights, the authors will begin to see how these intersecting identities relate to education, health, and socioeconomic outcomes.
