ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of literature on multiracial people and multiracial identities in higher education, including students, faculty, and campus professionals. As the multiracial students who have been the subject of study for 3 decades reach adulthood and diversify academic workplaces, they may have opportunities as faculty and professionals to influence programs, services, curriculum, and policies that in turn influence multiracial students. Even without direct evidence that programs, services, and policies have improved campus climate and quality of life for multiracial students, the literature suggests that it is worthwhile to continue efforts to improve campus climate for students, faculty, and staff. Building explicit goals for campus learning about multiraciality and multiracial identity into diversity curriculum is one approach; ensuring that training for staff and faculty also includes information on reducing multiracial microaggressions through policy implementation, procedures, and curriculum is also necessary.
