ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the questions, issues, and tension points while expanding the theoretical breadth of one such form of racism in postsecondary education 'monoracism'. Despite the relevance of Hamako's work in social justice education, there is still limited literature on monoracism with higher education as its focus. The author's review of monoracism and the ways that literature on monoracism falls short guides us to use the remainder of this chapter to ask and explore three lingering questions, or tension points, that concern monoracism. Finally, the authors believe that harm rests in refusing to acknowledge their roles in upholding systems of domination. In short, the authors argue that when scholars and practitioners focus on monoracism, they must do so in ways that also interrogate its relationship to other systems of domination and oppression.
