ABSTRACT
The author raised his hand and asked the proctor for clarity on the race and ethnicity section of the state exam. “It says to bubble in one option. What if I identify with two of them?” He responded, “You can bubble in the option that says Other.” Everyone in the classroom laughed. His heart sunk, and he felt a strong sense of embarrassment. Homemade flour tortillas were Abuelita's specialty, and she encouraged my inay to practice every day until she perfected the recipe. He would always run to the kitchen to steal a tortilla straight from the comal (griddle) when Inay wasn't looking. After breakfast, Inay cleaned the house while she listened to Selena and Patsy Cline on her portable radio. Throughout his graduate career, he aspired to gain professional experience at a California community college.
