ABSTRACT

A book that begins by documenting the eratic academic career of its author and asserts that her inquiry method involves going around in circles doesn't exactly require a conclusion. In fact, a conclusion may not be appropriate because this narrative implies an ongoing conversation. However, I have written this book in an effort to elucidate some of the underlying issues that make it very difficult to change the ways we teach college students and organize our universities. I have always been more interested in the why than in the how of things. My personal belief is that if you understand why circumstances are the way they are, you are in a better position to reframe understanding of the causes and therefore change the experience.
