ABSTRACT

Ling's main source of funding for her research assistantship comes from a company. Although the material she is working on has some interesting properties from the physics perspective, she is disappointed by the lack of interest on the part of the industry representatives. They simply don't seem to be interested in the basic science behind this material. All they care about is that it responds properly under certain conditions so they can patent it. Ling fears that the company is not going to let her publish the properties that she has discovered in this material. Her only hope is that her advisor can convince them to allow publishing the basic science behind the material in a timely manner; otherwise, her graduation may be delayed up to six months.
