ABSTRACT

Jennifer has taken it upon herself to get involved with the university's faculty development center so that she can learn more about teaching and the faculty role. Today she is attending a workshop on service. Having heard a lot recently about service learning, Jennifer is excited to learn more. What she discovers at the workshop, however, is a conversation entirely focused on balancing service with teaching and research. She has never really heard anything before about service as it applies to a faculty position and feels a bit panicked. As she listens further to the faculty members in the workshop, she learns that there is whole lot more to the faculty role than she originally thought. She wonders to herself, “How could I have gotten this far in my program and never have heard anything about this?”
