ABSTRACT

This chapter describes that pivot, the roles the Center for Teaching played in making it possible, and the lasting changes to teaching and learning that seem to have resulted from such intense faculty development. Vanderbilt University, founded in 1873, is a private research university located in Nashville, Tennessee. The CFT started offering the Online Course Design Institute (OCDI) in May 2020, and the center continued to offer it every two weeks through August, for a total of eight offerings. Once classes started in the fall, CFT interactions with faculty were primarily around technology support, not course design, but the center did offer another OCDI as well as several virtual conversations where faculty could compare their experiences teaching in online and hybrid settings. Open-ended comments following this survey question showed a variety of caveats-online courses can work well for some students or some courses or with sufficient instructor prep making this a nuanced set of beliefs about online teaching and learning.
