ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the student experience, highlighting key themes that emerged from student surveys. Starting early in the pandemic, Oregon State University, among many other organizations and institutions, conducted surveys designed to understand the student experience and to gather data to help make decisions. While relevant to the remote-learning period, these snapshots of the student experience give us the chance to identify practices and strategies to improve the delivery of higher education for students moving forward. Over eight months, the team, of which the authors were part, conducted three surveys to better understand the student experience with remote learning. An additional survey in November of 2021 allowed us to collect data to better understand the student experience during the transition to campus. Broad trends in mental health and well-being for college students provide an important backdrop from which to understand how students experienced their coursework and interactions with faculty.
