ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we share some of the strategies that women—especially African Americans—should employ if they aspire to climb the ladder in higher education. Even if not interested in “upward mobility” per se, they may usefully follow these strategies to be successful in academia and to build a career in all areas of higher education administration. While other chapters have addressed mentorship, leadership, and the history of African American women in the profession, this chapter focuses on the steps that can be taken to formulate the skill set that may ultimately lead to success in the field.
