ABSTRACT
Empire State College, SUNY’s liberal arts college for adults, was founded on the principles of access, individualized learning, and the assessment of prior learning. For thirty years it has rooted its educational model on a highly individualized process of Educational Planning in which a student working closely with a faculty “mentor” designs a program that includes both prior and future learning and that can be adapted quite specifically to students’ professional, academic, and personal goals.
