ABSTRACT

In the United States, colleges and universities have the positionality to educate students for active citizenship through both curricular and cocurricular initiatives in civic engagement. At Rollins College, the Democracy Project initiative represents a pathway for all students to explore their civic identity and consider how they will positively contribute to American democracy throughout their lives. During first-year orientation, students are introduced to the Center for Leadership & Community Engagement (CLCE), which serves as the institution’s hub of civic engagement, supporting curricular and cocurricular opportunities for students to work alongside community-based organizations. The college experience can provide an opportunity for young people to develop both their commitment to community involvement and the skills needed to enact change. CLCE’s associate director advises the Democracy Project alongside a part-time graduate assistant.
