ABSTRACT

As a Catholic women’s liberal arts college, Alverno College lives its Franciscan heritage through its mission to “prepare women for lives of personal and professional distinction and meaningful engagement with the world”. It offers academic programs in health care, STEM, behavioral sciences, education, business and communication, humanities, and the arts to undergraduate women and graduate-level women and men. Alverno is widely recognized for its ability-based curriculum and focus on “assessment-as-learning.” Community-based learning is a high-impact practice that improves student learning, retention, and persistence. In 2010, Alverno secured a grant from the US Election Assistance Commission to support its poll worker trainings. The poll worker training sessions were taught by two staff from the Milwaukee Election Commission, who, coincidentally, happened to be Alvemo alumnae.
