ABSTRACT

Higher education aims to prepare students for engaged citizenship. Student leadership is an integral part of building a sustainable, campus-based civic and democratic engagement program. This chapter discusses student leadership as a vehicle for sustainable campus planning and engagement. A few theories of leadership development provide potential insight into the process of student leadership for democratic engagement. The social change model of leadership was designed specifically for use with college students and defines leadership as “a purposeful, collaborative, values-based process that results in positive social change”. The social change model focuses on individual, group, and community values, including seven domains: consciousness of self, congruence, commitment, common purpose, controversy with civility, collaboration, and citizenship.
