ABSTRACT

Many colleges and universities are committed to embedding principles of civic learning and democratic engagement (CLDE) into the curriculum and cocurriculum. Campus Compact, a national coalition of colleges and universities committed to fostering the public purposes of higher education, is a leading voice in civic and public engagement. Student affairs practitioners, like many higher education constituents, have a shared responsibility to institutionalize CLDE at their respective institutions. For many campuses, the first step is to assemble a diverse team of faculty, staff, students, and community partners. Voter registration is the basic obligation of colleges and universities. Institutions of higher education must provide information about voter registration and the process to obtain proof of residency for on-campus students.
