ABSTRACT

Two million veterans are poised to enter higher education. They bring with them tremendous energy, discipline, and an understanding of this world that few students can match. It is said that there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for his or her friends. The men and women of the armed forces have demonstrated sacrifice through the loss of time with loved ones and spent physical and mental health. Some have given their very lives. In doing so, they simply live up to the standards set by our military: “I am an American, fighting in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense” (U.S. Department of the Army, 1988, p. 3). These men and women enroll in our educational institutions with the same seriousness of intent.
