ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the need to integrate information literacy skill building into the curriculum and teach it as a foundational learning component, particularly of PBL. It provides a model for teaching information literacy in tandem with the other course content. First-year students are novices in information literacy skills and disposition. Students have trouble evaluating information because they are unfamiliar with differences in and consequences of scholarly work versus nonscholarly work. Faculty are not experts on the complexity of resources available through the library and the full scope of the development of information literacy standards and frameworks. The chapter highlights key steps and examples of how faculty and librarians can integrate concepts of information literacy. It explores integration on a larger scale by bringing information literacy into a program or set of courses and partnering with librarians. The chapter provides examples of exercises, activities, and assignments that librarians and faculty use to advance an information literacy curriculum.
